Concept2 StrengthErg – The successor to the Concept2 Dyno, above all in a good way
Written by rowing coach and long-time Conceept2 importer Veikko Sinisalo
The Concept 2 Dyno was introduced to the market in 2000. It was widely used, and continues to be used, in top rowing, and as a strength training device for skiing, among other things. Examples of training with the Dyno are Minna Nieminen and Sanna Sten (Olympic silver medalist 2008), whose strength training did not include barbell training at all, but rather performed leg sets with the Dyno. We performed sets that were 20–100 in length and were always followed by a 3-rep max, which was intended to stimulate the nervous system. There has been little comparative research on the Dyno, which has shown its effectiveness, especially in competitive rowing training. The research results confirm my own experiences with the device.
Concept2 rejected the Dyno partly because the monitor would have had to be completely rebuilt to meet EU Chemicals Agency standards, and that would have been very expensive. As a rowing coach, I spoke to the founders of Concept2 a few times about the new version of the product, specifically because I saw good coaching potential in it, and now I am very happy to have been able to try the device out in Vermont this spring.
StrengthERG – a new, more compact Dyno, or something completely new?
Device weight 41 kg
Tested to withstand nearly 700 kg of force
Leg press
Pulling movement for hands
Press
Accurate force measurement
Monitor for feedback, or alternatively an application that acts as a monitor
Air resistance
Compact size, where the Dyno was 240 cm long, the Concept2 StrengthErg fits half that!
Infinitely variable resistance adjustment, the more air is released to the flywheel, the slower the sled moves
Stylish, Concept2 brand design
Intermittent work, meaning there is resistance in the push, the squat return is light
The price will likely be (well) under 2000 Euros, which is a bit expensive for a home device, but downright cheap for a gym device.
The Concept2 StrengthErg is excellent for dynamic strength training, in addition to competitive rowing, skiing and other endurance sports because strength training done with the StrengthErg does not freeze in the same way as barbell training. Strength can also be gained well during the competition season. The StrengthErg is excellent for training all aging people. The movements are safe, and most importantly, even maximum repetitions remain safe and the muscles receive the stimulus they need through innervation. In answer to the question in the title, maybe the bike has not been completely reinvented, but the device has become better and more user-friendly than its predecessor in many ways. I see that the device also belongs in regular gyms, after all, we all belong to the aging group of people whose muscles need proper stimuli!
